【心王】

heart king

（術語）心之主作用，對於心所之伴作用，而謂為心王。心王者，總了別所對之境，心所者，對之而起貪瞋等之情也。密教以之為金剛界之大日如來，心所即心數為其眷屬。此心王心數之差別，吽字義以大日為心王，餘尊為心數，十住心論等以五佛為心王，餘尊為心數，守護國經等以九尊為心王，餘尊為心數。但依主伴無盡因果不二之義，則無論何尊，總以中央配於法界體性智，故九會四重之聖者得各為心王也。涅槃經一曰：「頭為殿堂，心王居中。」大日經三曰：「安住心王，等同虛空。」成實論十六曰：「處處經中說心為王。」俱舍論六曰：「此中心王極少，猶與五十八法為俱有因。」四念處一曰：「心者心王，異乎木石。」

The master function of the heart (consciousness / mind (citta) ) - the “heart(mind)-king" (心王), comprehensively discerns the objects it encounters. In contrast, the concomitant mental faculties - the “heart(mind)-retainers" (心所) are the accompanying functions of the mind, arising as emotions such as greed, anger, etc. In Esoteric Buddhism, this heart-king is equated with Mahāvairocana of the Vajradhatu, while the heart-retainers, or "heart elements", are considered its retinue.
